ROX GET GUTHRIE FOR LINDSTROM & HAMMEL
The Colorado Rockies acquired pitcher Jeremy Guthrie from the Baltimore Orioles for pitchers Matt Lindstrom and Jason Hammel.
What does it give the Colorado Rockies
This off-season the Rox have focused on adding proven veterans, and Guthrie is clearly part of that plan. While he's not exactly stellar, the veteran righty excels at eating innings and the young Colorado staff needs someone to do that for them. With at least 200 innings pitched in each of the past three seasons, Guthrie should slot in nicely near the top of the rotation and help this re-tooled team win in 2012.
What does it give the Baltimore Orioles
Baltimore is in a seemingly constant state of rebuilding, and they don't project as contenders in 2012 (so moving Guthrie's hefty salary makes sense here, since they were poised to pay him big bucks in arbitration). Lindstrom and Hammel are both pitchers with a certain amount of untapped potential, but both are also erratic. Expect Lindstrom to compete for a late-inning role (possibly the closer's job) in spring training, and for Hammel to push for a rotation spot.
