CARDINALS ACQUIRE VETERAN DEROSA
The St. Louis Cardinals acquired infielder/outfielder Mark DeRosa from the Cleveland Indians for pitcher Chris Perez and a player to be named later.
What does it give the St. Louis Cardinals
Cleveland brought DeRosa in to help them contend but it just hasn't happened for them, so this move helps them add a solid young arm for the bullpen in Perez, while cutting some payroll. Perez has a chance to be the Indians' closer of the future, and is nice insurance for the rest of the season in case veteran stopper Kerry Wood continues to struggle. Shortstop Jhonny Peralta has been playing third lately (with Luis Valbuena at short), so the Indians are already adjusting.
What does it give the Cleveland Guardians
In DeRosa, the Cards get a quality veteran who can play several positions, the most important of which is third base. St. Louis has really struggled to get consistent production from the hot corner, and DeRosa can hold it down (while providing a much-needed righty bat), possibly until prospect Brett Wallace is ready to make the jump from Triple-A.
