M'S ADD INFIELDER RYAN
The Seattle Mariners acquired infielder Brendan Ryan from the St. Louis Cardinals for pitcher Maikel Cleto.
What does it give the Seattle Mariners
Above all the versatile Ryan gives the Mariners very good defensive depth at several spots around the diamond--especially at second base (where uber-prospect Dustin Ackley may not be ready yet) and shortstop (where Jack Wilson is aging fast). The Mariners have placed a real emphasis on defense in recent seasons and while Ryan won't likely bring much with the bat, he has a chance to start regularly at either second or short.
What does it give the St. Louis Cardinals
St. Louis' recent deal to bring in Ryan Theriot pretty much settles them at shortstop going forward, and that made Ryan expendable. Cleto has a pretty good arm but has yet to find much consistency or success at the Single-A level, so he's far from helping the Cardinals out in the big leagues. Still, he's a good pickup for the Cards in a deal for Ryan.
