TREVINO TRADED TO THE YANKEES
The New York Yankees acquired catcher Jose Trevino from the Texas Rangers for pitchers Albert Abreu and Robert Ahlstrom.
What does it give the New York Yankees
The Yankees needed a backup catcher due to the injury to recent acquisition Ben Rortvedt, so that should be Trevino's role for the time being. Kyle Higashioka will be the No. 1 backstop in New York this season. The Yanks may carry three catchers in 2022 when Rortvedt returns from injury.
What does it give the Texas Rangers
The Rangers had a surplus behind the plate after acquiring Mitch Garver from Minnesota in the off-season. So, they sent Trevino to the Bronx in exchange for two young arms. Abreu has a chance to pitch meaningful innings as a reliever for Texas this season. Lefty Ahlstrom is a long-range prospect.
Fantasy impact
Trevino does not have enough of a bat to be picked up (even in the deepest league formats) this season, while Abreu's role with the Rangers is in question to begin 2022. Keep an eye on the latter. Ahlstrom is a few years away from fantasy relevance.
