HAMMEL TO COLORADO

The Colorado Rockies acquired pitcher Jason Hammel from the Tampa Bay Rays for pitcher Aneury Rodriguez.

What does it give the Colorado Rockies
The Rockies have a lot of question marks in their rotation, especially with unproven starters Jorge De La Rosa and Franklin Morales in the No. 4 and 5 slots. Hammel brings a nice insurance policy to the Rox, and could get a chance to help out right away in long relief.

What does it give the Tampa Bay Rays
The Rays had to choose between Hammel and longtime prospect Jeff Niemann (as both players were out of minor league options) and they chose Niemann as their fifth starter. Making a trade was clearly a more appealing route than to risk losing Hammel on waivers (which he would have been placed on if Tampa wanted to send him to triple-A). In Rodriguez, they add a live arm who was pretty good pitching in the lower minors last season.
