RAYS JETTISON JASO TO M'S

The Seattle Mariners acquired first baseman/catcher John Jaso from the Tampa Bay Rays for pitcher Josh Lueke and a player to be named later or cash considerations.

What does it give the Seattle Mariners
Jaso should provide the Mariners with a solid lefty bat and the ability to back up (or platoon with) righty starting catcher Miguel Olivo. He's not very good defensively but Jaso has solid patience as a batter (enough that he might be able to pinch-hit or even DH) and is a veteran clubhouse presence.

What does it give the Tampa Bay Rays
This is a head-scratching trade for the Rays. While it makes sense for them financially to move Jaso (especially considering several rumors they'll soon sign defense-first veteran Jose Molina to platoon with Jose Lobaton), adding Lueke could provide more headaches than help. Lueke was up and down as a reliever last season with the Mariners, and his criminal past is disturbing.
