The Cincinnati Reds acquired infielder Kevin Newman from the Pittsburgh Pirates for pitcher Dauri Moreta.

What does it give the Cincinnati Reds
In Newman, the Reds add a decent middle infielder who is expected to serve as the team's starting shortstop in 2023. Cincinnati has several promising shortstop prospects in the system, so Newman should be viewed as a stopgap measure.

What does it give the Pittsburgh Pirates
The Pirates no longer needed Newman around, since they too boast plenty of young infielders. Moreta is a decent reliever who will get an opportunity to become a setup man in Pittsburgh. Oneil Cruz should be the everyday shortstop for the Bucs in 2023...and beyond.

Fantasy impact
Newman moves to the mother of all hitters' parks in Cincinnati, so there is some fantasy sleeper appeal here. He could be a bargain in 2023, though he is likely not good enough to be a starting fantasy shortstop in many leagues. Moreta has a chance to become a source of holds, if not saves. However, the Pirates are unlikely to win many games in '23.
