PIERCE JOHNSON JOINS ATLANTA

The Atlanta Braves acquired pitcher Pierce Johnson from the Colorado Rockies for pitchers Victor Vodnik and Tanner Gordon.

What does it give the Atlanta Braves
Johnson was part of a closer-by-committee approach in Colorado, so he could continue pitching in high-leverage roles out of Atlanta's bullpen down the stretch. While he does have an inflated ERA this season (6.00), he has struck out 58 batters over 39 innings with 13 saves so far in '23. Since the middle of June, he has been pitching much better (3.27 ERA in his last 12 games). The Braves are expecting that to continue.

What does it give the Colorado Rockies
Vodnik is a right-handed relief pitcher who was ranked among the Braves' top 10 prospects by many. In Double-A this season, he sported a 3.10 ERA with a 2.24 K/BB ratio. He could be a bullpen option for the Rockies within a few seasons. As for Gordon, he has had an up-and-down minor-league season split between Double-A and Triple-A ball. Colorado hopes the 25-year-old starter can one day become an option for their rotation.

Fantasy impact
Johnson is worth a waiver wire pick-up if he is not already on a roster in many leagues. He should offer value with his high strikeout rate and set-up opportunities with the Braves. He might even get some chances at closing games when Raisel Iglesias needs a day off. Both Vodnik and Gordon are probably not fantasy options for the next few seasons–if at all.
