BREWERS BRING IN CARLOS SANTANA

The Milwaukee Brewers acquired first baseman Carlos Santana from the Pittsburgh Pirates for infielder Jhonny Severino.

What does it give the Milwaukee Brewers
With starting first baseman Rowdy Tellez injured, the Brewers fill an immediate need for their playoff push. In Santana, they get a veteran who can still hit for power, get on base and play solid defense. The switch-hitting Santana should start against right-handed pitching, though his role could diminish once Tellez returns. At that time, the Brew Crew will have plenty of depth at first base and designated hitter, with Owen Miller also in the mix against left-handed pitching. Though a decent add, Santana should not be more than a rental for the Brewers.

What does it give the Pittsburgh Pirates
After a hot start, the Pirates have fallen out of playoff contention. Veteran Santana was signed only for this season, so it makes sense to move on from him for Severino. An 18-year-old shortstop from the Dominican Republic, Severino has shown flashes of power and speed in Rookie ball (7 home runs and 15 stolen bases in 60 games). He is not a highly ranked prospect, but he was an international signing of note in 2022, so there is potential here. With Santana's departure, the Pirates will also give more at-bats to younger options in the organization.

Fantasy impact
Santana's numbers should benefit from slotting into a stronger Brewers lineup. But keep an eye on his playing time, as he could lose an everyday role when Tellez returns from injury. Meanwhile, Severino will need to take significant steps in the minors to gain fantasy relevance in the coming years.
