ARIZONA ADDS JACE PETERSON
The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired infielder/outfielder Jace Peterson and cash from the Oakland Athletics for pitcher Chad Patrick.
What does it give the Arizona Diamondbacks
In Peterson, the Diamondbacks add a versatile infielder who can start against right-handed pitching. He does not hit for power or average, but he is a grinder who gets on base and can steal bases. As a D'back, Peterson should see time primarily at third base, but he can also play in the outfield. He will help fill the void left by the Josh Rojas trade and the Evan Longoria injury.
What does it give the Oakland Athletics
With a playoff berth well out of reach, Oakland chose to get an asset for veteran Peterson. Though not a highly ranked prospect, Patrick is a pitcher with some potential. A 2021 draft pick, the right-hander has started 19 games in Double-A ball this season, managing a 4.71 ERA. There is room for improvement here, but Patrick should have a better path to the majors with the A's.
Fantasy impact
Peterson will get a small boost hitting in the Arizona lineup, but he will likely not be the everyday player he was in Oakland. That hurts his already limited fantasy value. As for Patrick, he is not yet a name to watch for, but that could change in the next year or two. Time will tell.
