FLAHERTY IS AN ORIOLE

The Baltimore Orioles acquired pitcher Jack Flaherty from the St. Louis Cardinals for infielder Cesar Prieto, and pitchers Drew Rom and Zack Showalter.

What does it give the Baltimore Orioles
The Orioles are hopeful Flaherty is exactly what they need (a front-of-the-rotation starter). This season, Flaherty has produced mixed results on a disappointing Cardinals team. However, he has been much better since the calendar turned to July. With many of Baltimore's current starters reaching career highs in innings, Flaherty could provide a big boost. He will most likely start in a playoff series if/when the Orioles get there.

What does it give the St. Louis Cardinals
The Cardinals continue to be sellers for the first time in awhile. Prieto is already in Triple-A ball, but was expendable with the Orioles having so many young infielders. The Cards get the No.16 ranked prospect in Baltimore's system (according to MLB.com). Rom is a crafty left-handed pitcher that relies on deception. He is also in Triple-A ball, giving the Cardinals two players close to being ready for MLB. Showalter is further away.

Fantasy impact
Camden Yards has become a pitcher's ball park, so pitching there could boost Flaherty's numbers. That could also be offset by the offenses of AL East teams. If fantasy leaguers have him already, sit tight. Prieto and Rom should reach the majors faster with the Cardinals. Wait for them to prove themselves before adding either player. Showalter is off the fantasy radar for now.
