JOSH BELL JOINS THE MARLINS
The Miami Marlins acquired first baseman/designated hitter Josh Bell from the Cleveland Guardians for infielders Kahlil Watson and Jean Segura.
What does it give the Miami Marlins
Bell is an immediate upgrade at first base for the Marlins, who were clearly not satisfied with the production of Garrett Cooper and Yuli Gurriel. With Cooper traded in a separate deal on deadline day, Bell will be the new everyday first baseman. He brings switch-hitting power to the middle of the lineup, and carries an option for next season too. A nice addition.
What does it give the Cleveland Guardians
The Guardians released Segura as part of the trade, so he is out of the picture. Watson is the intriguing piece in the deal. The former first-round draft pick has power and speed, but has progressed slowly in the minors. Distractions on and off the field have not helped. Watson will be a project for the Guardians, but he has plenty of time to turn things around at age 20.
Fantasy impact
Bell will play every day and continue to hit in the heart of the order for Miami, so his fantasy value goes unchanged. If Watson can move his development in the right direction, he is worth a look in keeper leagues over the next few seasons. Segura needs a fresh start somewhere, but avoid him for now.
