PADRES GET GARRETT COOPER
The San Diego Padres acquired designated hitter/first baseman Garrett Cooper, pitcher Sean Reynolds and cash considerations from the Miami Marlins for pitcher Ryan Weathers.
What does it give the San Diego Padres
In Cooper, San Diego brings in a useful right-handed bat who can form a platoon against lefties at first base or designated hitter. At those positions, the Padres now have ample depth with Cooper, Jake Cronenworth, Matt Carpenter and the newly acquired Ji-Man Choi. As for Reynolds, he is a giant of a relief pitcher (6'8") who will serve as organizational depth. He has yet to make his MLB debut.
What does it give the Miami Marlins
The seventh overall pick in the 2018 draft, Weathers never found major-league success in San Diego. Despite making 29 starts for the Padres across three seasons, he managed a subpar 5.73 ERA, and has not fared much better in Triple-A ball. Nevertheless, Weathers is still just 23 so a change of scenery could do him well. With the Marlins, he will start out as depth in the minors, though a recall could come in the near future.
Fantasy impact
Cooper is the only piece trade here who will be in the majors right away. His fantasy value could suffer after the trade, as he may no longer be an everyday player given the depth of the Padres. Weathers and Reynolds are not on the fantasy radar currently, but Weathers is worth monitoring should he get a shot in Miami's rotation.
