LA CLEARS 40-MAN SPOT FOR OHTANI
The New York Yankees acquired pitcher Victor Gonzalez and infielder Jorbit Vivas from the Los Angeles Dodgers for infielder Trey Sweeney.
What does it give the New York Yankees
The Yankees take advantage of the Dodgers' roster crunch to acquire a bullpen piece and infield prospect. Gonzalez gives the Yankees a left-handed pitcher in a bullpen currently heavy on right-handers. He will have a strong chance to make the team out of spring training. Vivas was ranked as the Dodgers' No.10 prospect (MLB.com). He is most known for his contact skills.
What does it give the Los Angeles Dodgers
Originally rumored to just be a move to clear a roster spot for the massive signing of Shohei Ohtani, the Dodgers did land a 2021 first-round draft pick in infielder Sweeney. A left-handed hitter, Sweeney hit .252 at the Double-A level in 2023 and could be pushing some of the Dodgers infielders on the left side of the infield for playing time within the next couple of seasons.
Fantasy impact
The fantasy intrigue in this trade comes from the two prospects involved (Vivas and Sweeney). Both are highly regarded as potential big-league talents, so keep an eye on their development. Their values should go up. As for Gonzalez, he will just pitch out of the bullpen without much fantasy ramifications.
