SEATTLE GETS RELIEVER SANTOS
The Seattle Mariners acquired pitcher Gregory Santos from the Chicago White Sox for pitcher Prelander Berroa, outfielder Zach DeLoach and a competitive balance round B draft pick in 2024 (No. 69 overall).
What does it give the Seattle Mariners
Santos provides the Mariners with another late-inning relief option out of the bullpen. The 24-year-old right-hander pitched well in 2023, his first full major-league season, posting a 3.39 earned-run average to go with six holds and five saves. He is a nice pickup for Seattle, although he may not be able to match his setup or closer pedigree that he fashioned in Chicago. The M's obviously love Santos because they surrendered three assets to acquire him.
What does it give the Chicago White Sox
The White Sox move on from Santos after his strong debut in 2023, bringing in multiple pieces for their ongoing rebuild. Berroa gives them a younger reliever to work with. He has shown tremendous strikeout upside in the minors and should challenge for a bullpen role in 2024. A left-handed outfielder, DeLoach had an impressive 2023 at Triple-A (23 HR, 88 RBI, .286 BA in 138 GP). DeLoach may begin '24 in the minors but could make his MLB debut.
Fantasy impact
The move to Seattle hurts Santos, as he likely will not have many save opportunities. Holds should still be a possibility. On the other hand, Berroa is worth watching if he impresses enough to earn a high-leverage bullpen role in Chicago. DeLoach is on the fantasy keeper radar.
