GREG JONES GOES TO COLORADO
The Colorado Rockies acquired infielder Greg Jones from the Tampa Bay Rays for pitcher Joe Rock.
What does it give the Colorado Rockies
In Jones, the Rockies add a depth infielder whose greatest asset is his speed. The 26-year-old has put up impressive stolen base numbers in the minors, though he has struggled to get on base and make consistent contact. Jones had already been optioned to Triple-A ahead of opening day, but he will now have a better shot at making his MLB debut in 2024, as Colorado has fewer MLB-ready options in their infield.
What does it give the Tampa Bay Rays
The Rays have plenty of infield depth, so they instead brought in a pitching prospect for Jones. Rock is a tall left-handed starter who was a second-round draft pick of the Rockies in 2021. He managed a 4.50 ERA in 19 starts at Double-A last season, before struggling in a lone appearance in Triple-A ball. While Rock is not a top prospect, he has good strikeout ability. Therefore, he could develop well in the Rays organization.
Fantasy impact
This trade has no fantasy impact. Jones has yet to make his MLB debut, and even if the Rockies recall him, his stolen base potential is likely not enough to make him worth rostering. On the other hand, Rock has a lot to prove before he merits consideration in fantasy leagues.
