BURCH SMITH SENT TO MIAMI
The Miami Marlins acquired pitcher Burch Smith from the Tampa Bay Rays for cash.
What does it give the Miami Marlins
The phone lines between the two Florida teams remain open, as they make another trade together. This time the Marlins acquired the 33-year-old Smith, who has not pitched in MLB since 2021. Interestingly, the Marlins added him to the active roster, so he looks to be opening the season with the club.
What does it give the Tampa Bay Rays
Smith had an assignment clause in his contract, which allowed him to opt out if he did not make the Rays roster. So instead of losing him for nothing, Tampa Bay received some cash back (which helps to offset the money spent in order to acquire infielder/outfielder Niko Goodrum in another transaction).
Fantasy impact
Smith will be a middle reliever (at most) if he remains in MLB, so there is no fantasy impact here.
