THREE TEAM TRADE BRINGS BERTI TO NEW YORK
In a three-team trade, the New York Yankees acquired infielder/outfielder Jon Berti from the Miami Marlins; Miami acquired outfielder John Cruz from the Yankees, and outfielder Shane Sasaki from the Tampa Bay Rays; and Tampa Bay acquired catcher Ben Rortvedt from the Yankees.
What does it give the New York Yankees
With DJ LeMahieu starting the season on the injured list, the Yankees add a bench piece to help fill that void. Berti will bring speed and defensive versatility to the Yankees. He is a good addition to a team that always wants to contend for a title.
What does it give the Miami Marlins
The Marlins add two outfield prospects in return for moving out a infielder that had lost his spot on the roster. Cruz was in the Florida Complex League last season. At only 18, he is best known for his power. Sasaki is known as a contact hitter.
What does it give the
Rortvedt will probably slot in as the Rays' backup catcher behind Rene Pinto this season. The Rays prefer a defense-first catcher on the roster, so Rortvedt can fill that role perfectly. Just do not expect a lot of offense from him going forward.
Fantasy impact
Berti's best fantasy asset is his speed. He could offer some value if he gets consistent playing time, which is unlikely. Rortvedt is all defense, all the time, leaving him out of any fantasy conversation. Both Cruz and Sasaki will spend all season in the minors. They have little keeper value at this time.
