ASTROS ACQUIRE INFIELDER AMAYA
The Houston Astros acquired infielder Jacob Amaya from the Miami Marlins for pitcher Valente Bellozo and cash.
What does it give the Houston Astros
Amaya was a top-10 prospect for the Marlins (per MLB.com), so he is an interesting addition to the Astros. Primarily a shortstop, the 25-year-old is known more for his defense than his offense. Still, he did hit 15 and 17 home runs in the past two minor-league seasons, respectively, and he can also get on base. He will serve as depth in the minors but could earn a promotion as a backup infielder or injury fill-in at some point this season.
What does it give the Miami Marlins
The Marlins may have soured on Amaya too quickly, a little over a year after acquiring him from the Dodgers. That said, the return for one of their high-ranked prospects is underwhelming. Along with cash, they acquired Bellozo (a 23-year-old pitcher who has been in the Astros organization since 2017). Despite a 5.55 ERA in 2023, his K/BB ratio shows promise. Bellozo has yet to pitch above Double-A ball, but will look to do so with Miami.
Fantasy impact
As a defense-first infielder, Amaya is not an exciting prospect for fantasy managers. His move to Houston does not improve his chances of seeing MLB at-bats, either. Avoid Amaya for now, but a fresh start could be just what he needs. Bellozo is well off the fantasy radar at this point.
