ORIOLES AND BREWERS SWAP PITCHERS
The Baltimore Orioles acquired pitchers Thyago Vieira and Aneuris Rodriguez from the Milwaukee Brewers for pitcher Garrett Stallings.
What does it give the Baltimore Orioles
In Vieira, the Orioles add a hard-throwing reliever to their bullpen. The 31-year-old has decent strikeout ability but has allowed too many baserunners so far this season (1.70 WHIP in 22.1 innings). After being designated for assignment, Vieira now gets a chance to show better consistency in Baltimore. Expect him to pitch in low-leverage situations. Rodriguez is a 19-year-old Dominican right-hander. He still has a long road ahead in his development.
What does it give the Milwaukee Brewers
Vieira was ineffective with Milwaukee, so they chose to bring in a younger pitcher instead. Stallings, 26, is a right-hander who has worked as both a starter and reliever in the minor leagues. He has yet to post an ERA below 5.00 in parts of two seasons in Triple-A ball, but his strikeout/walk ratio does show some promise. While he could still earn an MLB recall one day, this trade is more about adding depth in the minor leagues for the Brewers.
