JOSE E. HERNANDEZ HEADS BACK TO LA
The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired pitcher Jose E. Hernandez from the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash.
What does it give the Los Angeles Dodgers
A left-handed reliever, Hernandez is primarily a depth addition for the Dodgers, who already have multiple southpaws in their bullpen. In parts of two seasons with the Pirates, the 26-year-old managed a mediocre 4.82 ERA and 1.39 WHIP in 56 innings–though he did record 66 strikeouts. He could earn a role with the Dodgers over time and is a decent low-risk acquisition.
What does it give the Pittsburgh Pirates
The Pirates originally selected Hernandez from the Dodgers in the 2022 Rule 5 Draft. Since then, he showed some promise but was outperformed by other left-handers in the Pittsburgh organization. Hernandez was designated for assignment prior to this trade, but for the Pirates it is still a little disappointing to get only cash in return for him.
Fantasy impact
The Dodgers know Hernandez well, having first signed him in 2016. He could prove useful to the Dodgers, but he is unlikely to see usage in fantasy-relevant situations anytime soon.
