CIVALE TRADED TO THE BREWERS
The Milwaukee Brewers acquired pitcher Aaron Civale from the Tampa Bay Rays for infielder Gregory Barrios.
What does it give the Milwaukee Brewers
The Brewers' pitching staff has not been able to shake the injury bug this season. They hope bringing in Civale offers some reinforcement. Civale has struggled this season, pitching to a 5.07 ERA. Before this year, he sported a 3.77 ERA over parts of five seasons for Cleveland. So there is hope he can turn it around. Even if he pitches like he has this year, he should help the Brewers continue to battle for first place in their division.
What does it give the Tampa Bay Rays
The Rays traded high-end prospect Kyle Manzardo for Civale at last season's trade deadline, and he struggled to a 4-9 record with a 5.17 ERA with Tampa Bay. Do they now regret making that trade? With prospects pushing for a chance in MLB, the struggling Civale became expendable. Barrios is only 20 years old and in high single-A ball. His main tools are his defense and contact. It will be interesting to see how the Rays develop him.
Fantasy impact
Civale is a pitcher whose forte is command, which limits his fantasy value due to low strikeout rates. Do not expect much to change for him fantasy-wise as he moves to the Brewers. In Tampa Bay, this trade may open up a rotation spot for Shane Baz, who has battled back from Tommy John surgery.
