D'BACKS PICK UP PUK

The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired pitcher A.J. Puk from the Miami Marlins for infielder Deyvison De Los Santos and outfielder Andrew Pintar.

What does it give the Arizona Diamondbacks
The Diamondbacks had signalled earlier in July that their intentions were to bolster their bullpen at the deadline. With the Puk addition, Arizona did just that. He has been dominant out of the bullpen this season with a 2.08 earned-run average. Once he arrives, Puk should be the top left-handed setup man with the D'backs, leaving Joe Mantiply free to fill multiple different roles. In addition to helping Arizona push for the playoffs this season, Puk also has two years left on his contract beyond 2024. Therefore, he offers insurance next year in case Paul Sewald departs.

What does it give the Miami Marlins
Miami tried to convert Puk into a starter, but that failed. So, they moved him back to the bullpen and he regained his form–which netted them two prospects. The prospect closest to MLB is De Los Santos. After being claimed and then returned in the Rule 5 draft, all he has done in the minors is hit 28 home runs in 2024. Known for his power, his average has also improved this season. Pintar is farther away from the majors. He was recently promoted to Double-A ball, where he will continue to develop. He is best known for his speed.

Fantasy impact
Puk's fantasy value went back up after he returned to the bullpen in a setup role for Miami. Now on a stronger Arizona team, he should be in line for similar success with more holds. His value should be even higher now. De Los Santos is trending upwards in fantasy baseball. His power was always known, but his swings and misses led to some concerns. Now with an improved average in the minors, he could become a middle-of-the-order bat if he can translate his skillset. He might get a chance in MLB later this season. Pintar is off the fantasy radar for the time being.
