AROZARENA ARRIVES IN SEATTLE

The Seattle Mariners acquired outfielder Randy Arozarena from the Tampa Bay Rays for outfielder Aidan Smith, pitcher Brody Hopkins and a player to be named later.

What does it give the Seattle Mariners
Did the Mariners ever need this! Known for having a stellar pitching staff (but also with injuries to their best hitters the lineup), Seattle's offense was really holding them back. Even in a down year statistically, Arozarena adds a big boost in the middle of the Mariners order. After an extremely slow start to 2024, Arozarena has begun to regain his form at the plate. If he can keep trending upward, he will be counted on to lead the offense back to the postseason. If they make it, Arozarena has been known to be a clutch performer in previous postseasons.

What does it give the Tampa Bay Rays
The Rays have been stuck around .500 for most of 2024. This trade indicates this is not the year to go for it. In typical Rays fashion, they traded away a player in line for a raise at season's end for prospects they think will be able to help them on the cheap. Smith has a chance to directly replace Arozarena one day. He has started his minor league career well with nine home runs and 28 stolen bases at Single-A ball. Drafted last year, when will Smith be ready? Hopkins, a right-hander, boasts a 2.90 ERA in 18 Single-A starts in '24. He has a long way to go.

Fantasy impact
Look for Arozarena to take off after arriving in Seattle. Over the last two months, he has hit .290 with a .920 OPS and seven home runs. He has a track record of thriving in the biggest moments, so being in a playoff race should bring the best out of him. Both Smith and Hopkins are only worth a look in deep dynasty leagues. They are still early in their development, so it is hard to be certain of their long-range potential.
