MEARS MOVED TO MILWAUKEE
The Milwaukee Brewers acquired pitcher Nick Mears from the Colorado Rockies for pitchers Bradley Blalock and Yujanyer Herrera.
What does it give the Milwaukee Brewers
Mears is in his fifth season in Major League Baseball. Throughout the first 4.5 seasons, he seemed to be struggling to find his place. However, recently he has really begun to find his form, posting a 1.80 earned-run average in his last 12 appearances. Combined with his 57 strikeouts this season, he is a nice depth pitcher to add to a Milwaukee bullpen that has been ravished by injuries for much of this campaign.
What does it give the Colorado Rockies
Blalock has pitched in Double-A most of the season, getting into only one inning with the Brewers. He projects to be a starter with a four-pitch mix, including a 92-96 mph fastball and a curve that is trending towards being an above-average second pitch. Herrera has had a lot of success in A ball this year, winning nine games (2.91 ERA, 77 K). It will be interesting for Rockies fans to see if he can continue that success at higher levels.
Fantasy impact
Even though Mears has been trending upward with strong underlying numbers, he is not a great fantasy option. He will be lower on the depth chart for the Brewers, especially with closer Devin Williams' imminent return. Pitchers going to Colorado lose value instantly, so even if the players acquired by the Rockies make it to MLB, their home ballpark makes it difficult to roster them.
