RED SOX PICK UP PRIESTER
The Boston Red Sox acquired pitcher Quinn Priester from the Pittsburgh Pirates for infielder Nick Yorke.
What does it give the Boston Red Sox
Priester is a 2019 first-round draft pick, going 18th overall. Developed as a starter, he has started and pitched behind an opener the last two seasons in Pittsburgh. He has had great success in the minors, but his young big-league career has led to a 6.46 ERA. With the rotation full, the Red Sox may use him out of the bullpen or as minor-league starting depth for the rest of 2024. At 23, Priester should factor into the rotation–eventually.
What does it give the Pittsburgh Pirates
Yorke is a first-round pick himself, getting drafted 17th overall in 2020. He has been filling the boxscores in his time split between Double-A and Triple-A ball this season (.278 BA, 10 HR, 46 RBI, 14 SB in 83 games). With his primary position being second base, and Nick Gonzales recently placed on the injured list, Yorke becomes an alluring option for the Pirates to call up and add some hitting to a struggling lineup.
Fantasy impact
This trade has all sorts of fantasy implications. For Priester he is less of a strikeout pitcher and more of a ground ball guy which can be beneficial in the hitter friendly AL East. With that being said a career 6.46 ERA is too scary to add. He may become more valuable once he establishes himself. Yorke was unlikely to see MLB playing time this season before this trade. Now in Pittsburgh it is a distinct possibility. His value for the rest of this season and beyond has risen exponentially.
