MARINERS, BLUE JAYS MAKE ANOTHER TRADE
The Seattle Mariners acquired designated hitter/infielder Justin Turner, and cash from the Toronto Blue Jays for outfielder RJ Schreck.
What does it give the Seattle Mariners
At times, it has looked like age has finally caught up to Turner this season; his offensive numbers have dipped. His postseason pedigree and ability to play first base likely attracted Seattle to him. Expect Turner to see playing time against left-handers (at least). If he makes the most of his opportunity, he could even become the Mariners' everyday DH or first baseman.
What does it give the Toronto Blue Jays
The Blue Jays continue to sell this trade deadline. In return for the veteran Turner, they get Schreck. He just recently moved up to Double-A ball. Known for his eye at the plate, he has 61 walks and only 54 strikeouts in 378 plate appearances this season. Moving Turner's contract also helps the Blue Jays get under the luxury tax threshold for 2024.
Fantasy impact
Turner's fantasy impact has really declined this season. He has become almost unstartable and even unrosterable in some formats. Now in Seattle, it will be interesting to see where he gets playing time–and how often. Both will factor into his ability to finish the season on a high note. Schreck has no value for now.
