LANE THOMAS GOES TO THE GUARDIANS

The Cleveland Guardians acquired outfielder Lane Thomas from the Washington Nationals for pitcher Alex Clemmey, and infielders Jose Tena and Rafael Ramirez Jr..

What does it give the Cleveland Guardians
In Thomas, the Guardians add a coveted power-speed threat to their outfield. After breaking out last season with 28 home runs, Thomas's power numbers are down this year. He has also missed some time due to injury, but the 28-year-old is third in the league in steals, rakes against left-handers and gets on base. He should give a much-needed boost to Cleveland's offense, as they look to stay atop the American League Central division in the second half of the season.

What does it give the Washington Nationals
Thomas was one of their best hitters in recent seasons, but the organization does have several exciting outfield prospects ready to prove themselves in MLB. Clemmey is an intriguing left-hander. He is just 19 but has great strikeout ability, and will now be among Washington's top pitching prospects. Tena could see time with the Nationals this season. He has hit for average and with moderate power in the minors. Ramirez Jr. was a 2022 signing, and he is only in low Single-A Ball currently.

Fantasy impact
Thomas's fantasy value should get a boost, especially if he bats toward the top of the Guardians lineup every day. Fantasy managers may want to monitor his usage early on, however. There will also be fewer at-bats now for Angel Martinez, Jhonkensy Noel and Will Brennan. Then in Washington, with the departure of Thomas, highly-touted outfield prospect Dylan Crews could be in line for his first call-up by the end of the season.
