SCOTT SENT TO SAN DIEGO IN 6-PLAYER DEAL!
The San Diego Padres acquired pitchers Tanner Scott and Bryan Hoeing from the Miami Marlins for pitchers Adam Mazur and Robby Snelling and infielders Graham Pauley and Jay Beshears.
What does it give the San Diego Padres
These additions bolster an already strong Padres bullpen. Scott was arguably the best reliever on the market ahead of the trade deadline, working to a minuscule 1.18 ERA this season. San Diego's closer Robert Suarez has been excellent too, but the left-handed Scott will provide options late in games. As well, Hoeing emerged as a useful long reliever and spot starter for Miami this season. He should fill a similar role for the Padres. They are going for it this season, so they paid a high price in terms of prospects for these pitching upgrades.
What does it give the Miami Marlins
The Marlins are selling after a disappointing year. Mazur and Snelling, both starters, immediately become among the team's best pitching prospects. Mazur already made his MLB debut this season and could get another look with the Marlins soon. Snelling is still only 20 years old and working in Double-A ball. Pauley also debuted earlier this season. While he struggled in his first MLB call-up, he has shown promising tools with power and speed. Beshears is another infielder drafted in 2023. He will continue his early progress in the Marlins organization.
Fantasy impact
This is an interesting trade from a fantasy perspective. It seems unlikely that Scott would immediately surpass Suarez as the Padres' closer. But it is possible both pitchers could see fewer save opportunities if they end up in a co-closer situation. Regardless, both Suarez and Scott will remain elite pitchers in high-leverage situations. As for the new Marlins prospects, Mazur and Pauley are the closest to joining the MLB roster, but their initial impact could be limited. Snelling may be the best long-term prospect of the group.
