GIANTS GET MARK CANHA

The San Francisco Giants acquired first baseman/outfielder Mark Canha from the Detroit Tigers for pitcher Eric Silva.

What does it give the San Francisco Giants
Canha, who is from the Bay area, looks like he was brought in to fill the spot left after the Jorge Soler trade. He is a much different hitter than Soler, offering more contact. Nonetheless, he should fill the right-handed side of a platoon either at first base or an outfield corner. The Giants may miss the playoffs so they traded away a more valuable asset in Soler, and then got Canha here to help finish out '24.

What does it give the Detroit Tigers
The Tigers brought in Canha to be a veteran presence on a young team. He did that and more but with playoff hopes fading, the Tigers will want to give younger players an opportunity. Maybe this means a return to MLB for first baseman Spencer Torkelson? As for Silva, he has been pitching in Double-A ball. The right-hander has a 4.35 ERA, so more development at that level is likely required.

Fantasy impact
Canha should fill the same role he has had for most of his career. His value is the same as before the trade. Stream him against left-handers and sit him versus right-handers. From the Detroit side, the more intriguing development will be if Torkelson gets another chance. He was once viewed as a long-term stud fantasy first baseman, but his 2024 season has raised some eyebrows. Can he get back to his early career trajectory? Silva has no fantasy value at present time.
