PADRES ADD MARTIN PEREZ
The San Diego Padres acquired pitcher Martin Perez from the Pittsburgh Pirates for pitcher Ronaldys Jimenez.
What does it give the San Diego Padres
Perez should step in as San Diego's new No. 5 starter, at least until Joe Musgrove returns from the injured list. Veteran left-hander Perez has struggled this season, posting a 5.20 ERA in 16 starts. Still, he can pitch deep into games and is not a bad depth acquisition. Perhaps he can turn it around this year.
What does it give the Pittsburgh Pirates
Perez's time in Pittsburgh did not work out at all, unfortunately. The Pirates will now move on and take a chance on the raw Jimenez, who is just 18 years old. He is a starting pitcher from the Dominican Republic, but is just beginning his development in the minor leagues.
Fantasy impact
At the moment, Perez is not pitching well enough to merit any attention in fantasy leagues. That is unlikely to change with his move to San Diego. His days of fantasy relevance may be over. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Jimenez is several years away from being on the fantasy radar.
