The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired pitcher Chase Shugart from the Boston Red Sox for pitcher Matt McShane.

Shugart provides the Pirates with more bullpen depth heading into the 2025 season. The right-hander was a 2018 draft pick of the Red Sox. He made his MLB debut last year, allowing four earned runs in 8.2 innings. In the minors, Shugart has displayed above-average strikeout ability, but also control issues.
What does it give the Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox upgraded their bullpen in free agency this off-season, so they elected to trade Shugart for a pitching prospect. The Pirates just selected McShane in the 13th round of the 2024 draft. Boston will take a chance on the 22-year-old right-hander, who will just be starting his professional career this season.
