JAYS TRADE ROLEN TO REDS

The Cincinnati Reds acquired third baseman Scott Rolen from the Toronto Blue Jays for infielder Edwin Encarnacion and pitchers Josh Roenicke and Zach Stewart.

What does it give the Cincinnati Reds
The Reds have long been frustrated by the lack of consistency and the defensive struggles of Encarnacion, and Rolen will be a big upgrade with the glove at the hot corner. He is also a veteran leader who might be able to help the Reds compete for a Wild Card spot down the stretch.

What does it give the Toronto Blue Jays
The biggest incentive for Toronto here is to move some of the last season-and-a-half of Rolen's fairly chunky contract, which will save them a little money. In Encarnacion, they receive a talented hitter who probably needed a change of scenery and comes at a significantly lower price tag. Roenicke is a solid reliever who is improving and Stewart may be the steal of the deal; he has rocketed up Cincy's minor league system this year and has recently been dominating hitters at Triple-A.
