HALOS LAND WELLS

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim acquired outfielder Vernon Wells from the Toronto Blue Jays for catcher Mike Napoli and outfielder Juan Rivera.

What does it give the Los Angeles Angels
The Angels are taking a big chance on Wells, who underperformed offensively for Toronto for several seasons before bouncing back in 2010. He could play either in left or center field, depending on what else the Angels decide to do before the start of 2011. He adds power, but also a very expensive contract. Still, he should be an upgrade over Juan Rivera with the bat. As for catching, Napoli's departure opens the door for prospect Hank Conger to challenge Jeff Mathis for playing time.

What does it give the Toronto Blue Jays
The Jays did well here to shed Wells' bloated contract. This should help get slugger Jose Bautista signed to a new deal. Napoli adds power to the catching position and his arrival means the Jays don't appear to have full confidence yet in top prospect J.P. Arencibia behind the dish (though Napoli may also see time at DH and first base). Rivera will likely play either left or right field, with Rajai Davis taking over for Wells in center. Toronto improved in many areas thanks to this deal.
