D'BACKS ADD HILL, McDONALD

The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired second baseman Aaron Hill and infielder John McDonald from the Toronto Blue Jays for second baseman Kelly Johnson.

What does it give the Arizona Diamondbacks
This was a strange deal for this time of the season (after the non-waiver trading deadline), since Arizona and Toronto decided to swap starting second basemen. In Hill, Arizona adds a player with a little more upside than Johnson. Both second sackers needed a change of scenery, clearly. Perhaps the key here is McDonald, whose defense should be valued by contending 'Zona at this time.

What does it give the Toronto Blue Jays
The Blue Jays may decide to bring McDonald back as a free agent, and Hill isn't a guarantee to remain in Arizona either, but for now Toronto will give Johnson a look as their new second baseman. Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos has proven to be willing to shake the tree at the right time, but you have to wonder if he couldn't have landed more than just Johnson in this swap at this time.
