GIANTS LAND LEFTY STANTON

The San Francisco Giants acquired pitcher Mike Stanton from the Washington Nationals for minor-league pitcher Shairon Martis.

What does it give the San Francisco Giants
Stanton is a well-traveled veteran lefty who's always been reliable as a situational southpaw in the bullpen, but he is getting up there in age at 39. Still, in San Francisco he won't be relied upon as the main left-handed reliever, with Steve Kline doing a fine job in that role. Stanton just gives them depth.

What does it give the Washington Nationals
Martis is a 19-year-old righty in his first year pro. But he has flashed some pretty impressive stuff in both the Arizona Fall League last year and in the low minors this year. There's plenty of time for him to develop into a real steal in this deal if he can climb up to D.C. in the next two or three years.
