METS GET LUIS AYALA

The New York Mets acquired pitcher Luis Ayala from the Washington Nationals for Anderson Hernandez.

What does it give the New York Mets
New York has struggled mightily in the pen lately, so the addition of Ayala gives the Mets something they're desperate for down the stretch: a dependable veteran short reliever. While Ayala isn't having a very good season and is not really the backup closer the team needs, he can bring some stability right away and provide a crafy righty arm when needed for a team in the thick of a pennant race.

What does it give the Washington Nationals
Ayala is in the final year of his contract, so sending him to the Mets saves the team a little cash the rest of the way on a player they appeared likely to lose via free agency following this season. The Nats aren't contending and Ayala hasn't been lights-out this year, so it makes sense for the team to give his spot to a youngster the rest of the way.
