CHRIS STEWART TO YANKEES

The New York Yankees acquired catcher Chris Stewart from the San Francisco Giants for pitcher George Kontos.

What does it give the New York Yankees
Stewart showed last season he can catch regularly if needed (as he filled in for the Giants with {P Buster Posey} out) and his calling card is he calls a great game. That will be a nice insurance policy for the Yankees, who have star {P Russell Martin} as their starter but can use a veteran, defense-first backstop. While Stewart doesn't have much of a bat, he's probably more suited to the backup role right now than the younger, better-hitting {P Francisco Cervelli} (who's been demoted to make room). Solid move by the Yanks.

What does it give the San Francisco Giants
San Fran saw talented backup {P Hector Sanchez} make great strides in the last year--so much so that he beat out Stewart and veteran {P Eli Whiteside} for the job. So with Sanchez firmly in place behind star starter {P Buster Posey}, the Giants could afford to move Stewart (who was out of minor league options). Meanwhile, Kontos is a promising righty reliever with a power arm, so he'll fit right in as organizational depth with the Giants' deep bullpen of flamethrowers.
