PADS BRING BOOMER BACK
The San Diego Padres acquired pitcher David Wells from the Boston Red Sox for a player to be named later.
What does it give the San Diego Padres
The Padres have remained in contention with a mediocre record all year despite lacking a consistent fifth starter. The need was made even more dire when Chan Ho Park was recently placed on the disabled list. So Wells fills a spot in the rotation as a postseason-savvy veteran who's still throwing with good command at age 43 and is familiar with San Diego, having pitched for them in 2004. He also gives them a different look as a lefty in an otherwise exclusively right-handed rotation.
What does it give the Boston Red Sox
Falling further out of the race for a postseason spot by the day, the Sox decided to get the best prospect they could in exchange for a veteran who wasn't going to be around for them in 2007.
