NATS GIVE WILY MO A STEADY JOB
The Washington Nationals acquired outfielder Wily Mo Pena from the Boston Red Sox for a player to be named later and cash considerations.
What does it give the Washington Nationals
It's quite possible that the Nationals landed the slugging outfielder they've been craving for a long time now (Alfonso Soriano's 2006 season notwithstanding). With Pena, it's always been a case of a young player bursting with potential but blocked by veteran outfielders in both Cincinnati and Boston. Now he heads to a team weak in the outfield where he can finally try to prove that while he may strike out 200 times a season as a big-league regular, he also might hit 50 home runs.
What does it give the Boston Red Sox
The Sox have been trying to unload Pena for a while now, feeling he's not quite the right fit on the bench of a team headed toward the postseason. They'll probably employ veteran Bobby Kielty as their fourth outfielder the rest of the way. When the dust settles on this trade, they'll probably wind up with a half-decent prospect as the player to be named later, which would make it a worthwhile deal.
