The Astros are banged up at the shortstop position, with regular Tommy Manzella currently on the DL. The team has been forced to use veteran utility man Geoff Blum there, so Sanchez will add some defensive depth.

The Red Sox are banged up behind the plate, as both Victor Martinez and Jason Varitek are currently injured, so Cash will help Gustavo Molina in the depth department. Neither is a viable long-term option, however.
