CUBS ADD GREGG
The Chicago Cubs acquired pitcher Kevin Gregg from the Florida Marlins for pitcher Jose Ceda.
What does it give the Chicago Cubs
Gregg was a valuable short reliever for the Marlins, who used him mainly as a closer. However, Gregg was prone to the blown save so look for the Cubs to use him in the eighth inning as the setup man for Carlos Marmol--who may take over for the departed Kerry Wood as the new closer.
What does it give the Miami Marlins
Ceda is a power pitcher with a closer's mentality that may eventually wind up as the replacement for Gregg in South Florida. However, he's not expected to be ready for the role in 2009. The likes of Matt Lindstrom and Renyel Pinto will probably get the first shot at replacing Gregg in the ninth inning.
