GARCIA FLIES TO PHILLY
The Philadelphia Phillies acquired pitcher Freddy Garcia from the Chicago White Sox for pitchers Gavin Floyd and Gio Gonzalez.
What does it give the Philadelphia Phillies
Having already added Adam Eaton to the rotation this off-season, the Phillies got even better and deeper with the acquisition of Garcia. While he's not exactly an ace, he's won at least 16 games four times and eats a lot of innings, making him a good No. 2 starter in the Phillies' rotation. The Phillies are now full of experienced veterans on the starting staff, from Garcia to Jon Lieber to Jamie Moyer and Eaton, not to mention young ace Brett Myers. With all that plus young lefty Cole Hamels, this trade could lead to another, with Lieber believed to be the next trading chip.
What does it give the Chicago White Sox
The acquisition of Floyd is a score for the White Sox, who landed a young righty bursting with potential. He's taken a downturn over the past two seasons, but there's a reason he was the fourth overall pick in 2001. If the Chi-Sox's coaching staff can help him rediscover his command, they could have a frontline starter on their hands. That said, this trade also maintains the logjam in the rotation. It was thought that they wanted to trade a starter to make room for Brandon McCarthy in the rotation, but Floyd only puts another young arm in the mix.
