RANGERS PRY McCARTHY AWAY
The Texas Rangers acquired pitcher Brandon McCarthy and minor-league outfielder David Paisano from the Chicago White Sox for minor-league pitchers John Danks, Nick Masset and Jacob Rasner.
What does it give the Texas Rangers
Though he didn't come cheap, the Rangers managed to land one of baseball's top young pitchers in McCarthy. General manager Jon Daniels is confident that McCarthy, 23, will step right in as the No. 3 starter and enjoy the first of many solid seasons in 2007. Forced to work long relief for the White Sox in 2006, McCarthy is more comfortable as a starter and should regain the dominance he displayed in that role during his minor-league career.
What does it give the Chicago White Sox
Over the last few years, the White Sox turned down countless trades involving Brandon McCarthy because they knew how much potential the young hurler possessed. However, when the Rangers called and offered up three pitching prospects, including the No. 1 overall prospect in their organization, John Danks, things changed in a hurry. Along with Danks, Nick Masset and Jacob Rasner should play major roles in the White Sox organization for years to come. In the meantime though, Chicago must fill its No. 5 slot in the rotation, the position that McCarthy held down. That role will likely be assumed by either Gavin Floyd (recently acquired from the Phillies) or Chuck Haeger.
