PHILLIES LAND LOHSE

The Philadelphia Phillies acquired pitcher Kyle Lohse from the Cincinnati Reds for minor-league pitcher Matt Maloney.

What does it give the Philadelphia Phillies
Heading into the season with six quality starters, the Phillies have since been hit with a bunch of injuries to the rotation, along with the transition of former ace Brett Myers to closer. The addition of Lohse eases their rotation woes somewhat, though he really isn't all that much better (if at all) than the rookies that are currently rounding out their rotation. Still Lohse will surely be plugged into the back end of the rotation to give them a quality start here and there.

What does it give the Cincinnati Reds
Maloney is a big, young southpaw who has looked solid in his third pro season down at Double-A. The 23-year-old was South Atlantic League (Low-A) pitcher of the year last season thanks to his good command over a deep arsenal of pitches. While he doesn't throw too hard, he gets by on his deceptive delivery, changing speeds and the good movement on his pitches. In a couple of years he could be a good mid-late rotation guy in the majors, and the Reds can use all the starting pitching they can get.
