NATIONALS ACQUIRE GOMES

The Washington Nationals acquired outfielder Jonny Gomes and cash from the Cincinnati Reds for outfielder Bill Rhinehart and pitcher Chris Manno.

What does it give the Washington Nationals
Gomes adds a right-handed bat to the Washington lineup, as well as a solid bat off the bench when not in the lineup. He could wind up in a platoon with Laynce Nix in left field. The Nats aren't really in contention, so this is a curious move at this time.

What does it give the Cincinnati Reds
The Reds had a logjam in left field, with Chris Heisey stepping up in recent weeks, Fred Lewis in the mix and prospect Yonder Alonso waiting in the wings. So they shipped Gomes out and landed two prospects. Manno has more upside, while Rhinehart appears to be merely a throw-in.
