MARLINS LAND LEE
The Miami Marlins acquired outfielder/first baseman Carlos Lee from the Houston Astros for infielder Matt Dominguez and pitcher Rob Rasmussen.
What does it give the Miami Marlins
In Lee, the Marlins land a solid bat and consistent performer. He can play left field but is likely to settle in as Miami's new first baseman--replacing the demoted Gaby Sanchez, who has struggled badly for much of 2012. Lee's discipline (he doesn't strike out much) is also valued for a Marlins club that generally strikes out too much. Dominguez and Rasmussen are good prospects, so the price to land Lee was relatively high. However, Miami has Hanley Ramirez at third base for the foreseeable future, and the rotation is strong. They could afford to part with both.
What does it give the Houston Astros
The Astros were trying to move Lee for a while now, but that is more because of their rebuilding ways than their feelings for Lee. The Dodgers were the first team to come calling for his services, but Lee nixed that deal. Houston could be thankful he did, since the return for Lee from the Marlins should truly help Houston down the road. Dominguez could easily win the third-base job at some point in 2012 (if not next season) from incumbent Chris Johnson, while Rasmussen has a definite shot at a rotation spot in the not-too-distant future.
