MARINERS SWAP PROSPECT FOR POWER

The Seattle Mariners acquired first baseman Ben Broussard and cash from the Cleveland Indians for outfielder Shin-Soo Choo and a player to be named later.

What does it give the Seattle Mariners
Having designated for assignment DH Carl Everett earlier in the day, Broussard comes to Seattle to fill the left-handed side of their DH platoon with Eduardo Perez. Broussard has enjoyed a breakthrough season in a platoon role in Cleveland, showing off the impressive ability to hit for both power and average.

What does it give the Cleveland Guardians
First off, the trade of Broussard opens up more opportunities to get Victor Martinez out of the catcher's gear and at first base, which also creates more opportunities to start for promising backstop Kelly Shoppach. And if that wasn't enough, they also get Choo, a promising outfielder, in the deal. Choo can do a little bit of everything on the offensive side of things, with a little power and good speed. Current left-fielder Jason Michaels hasn't fared well against right-handed pitching, so the left-handed Choo could slip right in as a platoon there.
