PAVANO NOW A TWIN

The Minnesota Twins acquired pitcher Carl Pavano from the Cleveland Indians for a player to be named later.

What does it give the Minnesota Twins
With Kevin Slowey recently shut down for the season to get wrist surgery and fellow rotation regulars Francisco Liriano and Glen Perkins struggling, the still-contending Twins were in desperate need of a veteran arm to bring stability to their young rotation. Enter Pavano, who's not exactly an ace but is nevertheless an above-average veteran righty who can bring some calmness and a quality arm every fifth day. The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports he will likely replace either Liriano or Perkins in the rotation.

What does it give the Cleveland Guardians
In the wake of big losses at the gate, Cleveland is doing everything possible to both save money and accelerate their rebuilding process. That meant jettisoning Pavano's contract (the pro-rated remainder of a one-year deal at $1.5 Million, but loaded with bonuses), to a division rival no less. The Tribe has several promising young arms from the deals for Victor Martinez and Cliff Lee, including Justin Masterson (set to take Pavano's rotation spot, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer) and Carlos Carrasco, to go along with talented holdovers David Huff, Jeremy Sowers, and Aaron Laffey.
