ORLANDO CABRERA TO THE GIANTS
The San Francisco Giants acquired infielder Orlando Cabrera from the Cleveland Indians for outfield Thomas Neal.
What does it give the San Francisco Giants
The Giants already added Jeff Keppinger to help at second base, so look for Cabrera to play shortstop for them--after playing second base in Cleveland this season. Cabrera is a proven winner but he's aging and may not have a lot left. Still, he should help settle the shortstop position from a defensive standpoint.
What does it give the Cleveland Guardians
The Indians recently promoted Jason Kipnis to play second base, making Cabrera expendable. And they are more than pleased with Asdrubal Cabrera's ascent this year as a shortstop. So, they moved Orlando Cabrera to land Neal--who projects as more of a platoon (right-handed) outfielder. Still, the Tribe couldn't expect more for an aging middle infielder.
